Search engines do many things on your website; Here I will give you all the steps which are done by the search engines.

  • Crawling
  • Indexing
  • Relevance calculation
  • Retrieving Results

Crawling

First crawls the search page to see if things are the process of attracting all the web pages associated with a website. This work is done by software, which is called crawler or spider (or Googlebot, in the case of Google).

Spider follows the link from one page to another and they search on their way. You need to know that your website has more than 20,000 pages, so it is not possible to see the entire page on a spider every day, it just revises the existing page by going to the new page. Another thing is that spider or crawler is not a human that has never seen images, flash, movies, javascript code on your website.

Indexing

After a page is crawled, the next step is the index of its contents. The process of creating an index for all the received web pages and keeping them in a huge database from where it can be retrieved later.

Procedures

When a search request arrives, the search engine processes it, that is, it compares the search string with the indexed pages in the database.

Relevance calculation

It appears that more than one page contains a search string, so the search engine starts searching the string for the relevance of each page in its index.

Retrieving Results

Getting the best match results of the last step in search engine activities. Basically, this is nothing more than just displaying them in the browser.
